Does posture affect your voice?
Poor posture results in reduced respiratory support for voice and also reduces the openness of the vocal tract—both of these will encourage the body to use extrinsic muscles for voice production, which will lead to vocal effort, vocal fatigue, inefficient voice use, and even muscle tension dysphonia (MTD).
Why is posture important for voice?
Good posture can be defined as the stance achieved that allows for an aligned spine (not twisted) and joints that are not bent. Not only does proper singing posture enhance your breathing, but it also optimizes it – resulting in a better-sounding voice. Correct positioning also makes it easier for sound to be produced.
What is voice posture?
An effective posture allows a subject in a static posture or while moving to more easily shift the tension between muscles, allowing for a free movement of the larynx without blockages and with benefits to voice production.
Does neck posture affect singing?
The position of your head and neck also changes the shape and space in the vocal tract. Narrowing this space means you lose fullness in your vocal quality. Correct alignment opens the space for better resonance.
Does lying down change your voice?
4. Acidity and reflux: On lying down at night, acid from your stomach can travel to the throat and inflame the posterior (back portion) of the vocal cords to cause hoarseness.
What happens if we try to sing with poor posture?
The vocal cords will then vibrate at the frequency of the pitch that we’re singing – making the sound! When you slouch or stand/sit in a bad posture, your rib cage won’t be able to expand fully and your diaphragm won’t be able to lower fully. This means your lungs won’t have enough room to expand.
Does your spine affect your voice?
The Larynx: Freedom through Stability Postural distortions that impact the cervical spine will impact laryngeal stability and freedom. To tune the voice, the cartilages of the larnyx must be free to tilt front to back at the cricothyroid joint.
Why are voices deeper in the morning?
A deeper voice in the morning is an inevitable result of a good night’s rest. During sleep, the tissues in our throat collect fluid, which is also what causes our eyes to look puffy when we just wake up. Our lack of vocal cord use during the night also causes mucus to build up during the hours we spend asleep.
Can you deepen voice?
Try speaking through your mouth, rather than your nose. It’s possible to get a deep nasal voice, but it sounds more masculine if you speak through your mouth. To deepen your voice, you’ll want to try and lower your pitch. To do this, relax your throat as much as possible, to avoid tightening your vocal cords.
What is the ideal posture for singing?
Abdomen should be flat and firm, held in an expandable position. Hands should be relaxed and still at the sides. Knees should be flexibly loose, and never locked. Feet should be slighty apart, one slightly in front of the other.
How can I align my body to help me speak more freely?
Here are some tips to ensure you’re using good standing posture:
- Stand evenly over both feet, shoulder width apart, do not lean more on one hip than the other.
- Relax your shoulders by lowering your chest and do not over pull shoulder blades back.
- Engage your abs (See #1 above)
How does the spine relate to vocal production?
There is general agreement that postural alignment is important in optimizing voice function. A number of articles have illuminated the way in which posture, particularly of the cervical spine, is directly related to vocal resonance and pitch control.
Is your morning voice your real voice?
Why is my voice so high?
Before your growth spurt, your larynx is relatively small and your vocal cords are relatively thin. So your voice is high and kid-like.
What is the best posture for singing?

How does your spine affect your voice?
A longer spine will help you breathe with more ease and allow your voice to be free and fully expressive. As I mentioned before, all breathing muscles are attached to the spine, and one of the first results of lengthening the spine is finding ease in breathing.
How does posture affect vocal performance?
Changes in posture can affect vocal performance and, similarly, changes to the voice production mechanism affect posture. Individuals with dysphonia (i.e. a difficulty or change in voice production) may present with certain postural dysfunctions such as increased tension of their anterior muscular peri-laryngeal chain.
What is the importance of posture in speech therapy?
An effective posture allows a subject in a static posture or while moving to more easily shift the tension between muscles, allowing for a free movement of the larynx without blockages and with benefits to voice production.
Can vocal rehabilitation improve dysphonia?
Individuals with dysphonia (i.e. a difficulty or change in voice production) may present with certain postural dysfunctions such as increased tension of their anterior muscular peri-laryngeal chain. These postural dysfunctions can, however, be improved with vocal rehabilitation. Figure 1. Complementary Techniques Used by Singers
Do singers overwork their facial muscles?
Singers, actors and public speakers often consciously or subconsciously over work the facial muscles, when they try to articulate the specific vowel or consonant sounds. Overdoing articulation means you are holding some part of your face too effortfully.
