What is a deck footing?
There are different kinds of footings, but in most cases, a deck footing is a cast or poured concrete pad that is below the soil line and in direct contact with solid compacted strong soil.
How many footings do I need for a deck?

10′ x 12′ | (3) 2×8 | 2 |

How deep is a pad foundation?
between 600mm and 2000mm
On the whole, the depth of a concrete pad is between 600mm and 2000mm – if greater depth is required, then pile foundations are generally considered to be more cost-effective. Pad foundations are only suitable when the ground has an adequate load bearing capacity at shallow depths.
Where do you apply foundation pad?
Pad foundations are rectangular or circular pads used to support localised loads such as columns. They are more common on larger purpose built structures such as industrial units or other commercial buildings to support large roofed structures.
How thick should a deck footing be?
– The bottom of the footings must be a minimum of 36” below finish grade level. – Footings must be a min. of 8” thick below post bottom. – Suggest footings be placed at least 48” away from the house foundation to avoid a back-filled area.
Are pad foundations cheap?
Whilst pad foundations are relatively quick and inexpensive to construct, they are only suitable on sites where the ground conditions provide stable load-bearing capacity within 3 metres of the surface.
How deep is a pad footing?
The depth of a pad foundations are typically between 600mm – 2000mm but once the pad becomes too deep, it may not be economical anymore, and it may be better to use pile foundations.
How do you calculate footing size?
To determine the size of the footing, a simple formula is used: Structural Load (lbs) / Soil Capacity (psf) = Footing Surface Area Required (sq. ft.)
