What happened to the village of Hallsands?
On a stormy night in January 1917, the Devon fishing village of Hallsands collapsed into the sea. The entire village was destroyed together with the livelihoods of its people. For decades the fishing village of Hallsands and its stunning coastline had been at the mercy of the forces of nature.

Do You Remember the old trout sister hotel in Hallsands Devon?
Don’t know if anyone remembers the Old Trout Sister hotel in Hallsands Devon, just next to the lost village. Well it was taken over by a developer in 2008 and converted to luxury apartments, some of which are up for rental self catering. We stayed in one called Start Bay Beacon recently, www.startbaybeacon.com and it was fantastic.
What is the story behind Hallsands hotel?
The former hotel, now converted into a series of luxury apartments, was built by Ella Trout, a former resident of Hallsands who lost her home following the storm of 1917. The story goes that while Trout was out fishing with her ten year old cousin in 1917, shortly after the loss of her house, they spotted a British ship strike a German mine.

The Trout hotel ran on the edges of the cliff, near the lost village of Hallsands until 1959. Although it’s no longer possible to access the village itself, a viewing platform is in place to see the village from- accessible from the same road as the Trout Apartments.
