How does Bookshop.org make money?
When a bookstore sells a book on Bookshop.org, they earn 30% of the list price; about 50% goes to the publisher, we discount up to 10%, and the remaining 10% is payment processing and fulfillment. Stores get to keep the entire profit margin off the book; we do not take a cut of their sales.
What percentage do book stores take?
For a popular literary fiction title, for which library sales or hand sales are a tiny percentage, BookScan is probably getting at least 75% or more of print sales. For other types of books, BookScan might record as little as 25% of print sales.

The bookstore buys the book for $6.00 (or 40% discount off the retail price) from the publisher (who calls that $6.00 the net price). Note that this discount varies between 40% and 50%. When the book sells to a customer, the store then makes a $4.00 profit ($10.00 – $6.00 = $4.00).
