How does a Hayward valve work?
Water from the pump is fed into the bottom of the filter tank, pushed up through the sand to release the trapped dirt particles and purged out a waste line connected to a port at the top of the Filter Tank. The Hayward Slide Valve is used to reverse the flow of water inside the Filter Tank.
How do I identify a Hayward multiport valve?

What setting should I clean my pool?

Why is sand coming out when I backwash?
Your pump may be too large or the sand level too high in the filter. When the filter is backwashing the water flow can cause the sand to rise high enough and overflow into the standpipe, which will allow the sand back into the pool.
Why is water coming out of my backwash?
Sand or dirt build-up around the multiport valve, diverter, or spider (aka spoke) gasket can cause water to leak out of the backwash line when the pool is set on “filter“. This is very common with sand filters and Diatomaceous Earth (DE) filters.
Should I run my pool pump on high or low?

What pressure should my pool sand filter be at?

Your filter may be clean and normal at 9-10 psi, but your neighbor’s filter gauge could run higher, and be clean at 15-16 psi. Some systems with very low resistance can run very low pressures, barely registering, while other filter systems can run quite high, pushing 30 psi when the filter becomes dirty.
