- Plan for the percussion.
- Keep an eye on rests.
What makes a wind band different than an orchestra?
A: The most obvious difference between the ensembles is the instruments that call the ensemble home. Violins, violas, cellos and basses make up the majority of an orchestra, while a concert band is made up of woodwind, brass and percussion instruments.

Arranging Guidelines
- Decide on a good song to arrange.
- Tell the Stud you’d like to arrange a song.
- Read the “Music” section of the YPMB website.
- Assign the melody to the trumpets or trombones.
- Assign the other section a rhythmic or chordal accompaniment.
- Assign the bass line to the sousaphones.
How many players can be in a wind band?
A wind ensemble can be anywhere from one player on a part up to a total of 60 or even a few more in the ensemble, meaning multiples of flutes, clarinets, trumpets, trombones, and others. For my wind ensemble scores I have consistently indicated that instrumentation should be one-on-part.
How many members are in a wind ensemble?
A Wind Ensemble usually will have between 40 and 45 musicians and the balanced instrumentation would look like the following: 3 flutes and piccolos.
What grade bands mean?
Performance bands are used to categorize a student’s performance on a test. Each band is a range of achievement. Bands are labeled to indicate what the score means for the student’s proficiency. In the example below, a score from 80-89% means the student has an Above Basic understanding of the material.
Is Grade 4 piano equivalent to a GCSE?
