The recommendation you hear most often in the hobby is to change your sediment, carbon and DI cartridges every 6-8 months and your TFC membrane every 2 years.
What does an RO Di remove?
The sediment and carbon cartridges are there for the removal of particulate and chemical matter such as rust, sand and chlorine. • The RO process by itself cannot remove all of the TDS, but passing the water through a DI (mixed bed resin) cartridge after going through the membrane removes any remaining TDS.
How does RO DI work?
A reverse osmosis system removes sediment and chlorine from water with a prefilter before it forces water through a semipermeable membrane to remove dissolved solids. After water exits the RO membrane, it passes through a postfilter to polish the drinking water before it enters a dedicated faucet.

How do you clean a Rodi unit?
Remove all housings and remove all pre-filters and post-filters from the system including sediment filters, carbon filters, in-line filters, and deionization cartridges. Remove the reverse osmosis membrane(s). Wash housings with a soft brush or cloth in warm soapy water. Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap.
When should I replace my Rodi filters in my reef tank?
A good rule of thumb is to replace your sediment filter and carbon block after six months. A more precise way to maximize the usable life of these two filters is to use a pressure gauge to identify when pressure reaching the membrane starts to decline.
How do you recharge DI resin?
Set the anion (the resin that floats) and the cation to the side and find something to do for an hour. After the hour is up take the anion resin and in two batches run one-gallon of water through each. Put your rinse water in the same container that you rinsed the anion resin in, in the earlier step.
Does DI resin reduce TDS?
DI removes total dissolved solids (TDS) from the water as the water passes through these DI resins. Depending on the TDS of the incoming water, the life of the cartridge will vary dramatically. You will get much greater purified water output from soft water than you would hard water.
