Is caricature an illustration?
A caricature is a drawing of a real person which distorts or exaggerates certain features, but still retains a likeness: in other words an exaggerated piece of portrait art.
What is caricature used for?
caricature and cartoon, in graphic art, comically distorted drawing or likeness, done with the purpose of satirizing or ridiculing its subject. Cartoons are used today primarily for conveying political commentary and editorial opinion in newspapers and for social comedy and visual wit in magazines.
How do caricatures work?
Caricature is subjective to a point. The artists goal is to draw how they perceive the face, and exaggerate that perception. The result may be different than how others perceive that face, but if the three elements we described in our definition are present it’s still a successful caricature.
How is caricature made?
To draw a caricature of someone, start by sketching the general shape of their head on a piece of paper. Then, look at the person, and choose one or two features that immediately jump out at you, like their nose, their lips, or their eyes. Once you’ve chosen one or two features, exaggerate them in your drawing.

My discussion will isolate four modes of caricature — portrait or definition, satire, comedy, and grotesque. As I hope to show, each of these modes is potentially present in even the simplest of caricatures. And in complex examples they are often combined.
