What is mix bed resin?
Mixed bed resins or mixed bed ion exchange resins are mainly used in the water purification industry for polishing process water to achieve demineralized water quality (such as after a reverse osmosis system). Mixed bed as the name states consists of strong acid cation exchange and strong base anion exchange resin.
How do you regenerate mixed bed resin?

- Backwash resin bed to separate the cation from the anion resin.
- Let the resins settle.
- Optionally: drain the water down to the resin bed surface.
- Inject caustic soda diluted in demineralised water.
- Displace the caustic with dilution water.
- Inject acid diluted in demineralised water.

What is mixed bed resin made of?
Standard mixed bed resin has 2 components – It consists of Strong Acid Cation (8% Crosslink) in the Hydrogen (H+) form and Type 1 Strong Base Anion in the Hydroxide (OH-) form. The manufacturer processes and rinses mixed bed to various levels of purity prior to shipment.
What is mix bed?
Mixed Beds are ion exchangers that have both Cation and Anion resins, mixed in a single vessel. The resin bed is in the both H-OH form. These units are normally designed so that they can be automatically operated, with all the necessary internals, instruments, components and controls.
Is regeneration the same as backwash?
Backwashing removes particulate matter, relieves any bed compression, and allows trapped gases to escape. Step II – Chemical regeneration. Regeneration displaces the ions that were exchanged during the service run, returning the resin to the original ionic form.
What is a mixed bed filter?
A mixed-bed filter fine polishes demineralized water from, for example, an EDI installation. In this way we can ensure that the final minerals and salts are removed from the water. The filter contains a mixture of two resins that act as cation and anion exchangers attracting positive and negative ions, respectively.

Can mixed bed resin be used for residential applications?
Mixed bed resin is used to produce deionized or demineralized water. Use of mixed bed resins for residential applications is uncommon. Depending on its level a purity, deionized water is aggressive and potentially strips metals from fixtures, appliances and pipes.
What types of resin do we stock?
We stock Purolite, Thermax & Jacobi components and mixed bed resins. Standard mixed bed resin is a combination of cation (H+) and anion (OH-). Water treated with mixed bed resin removes most of the cations and anions and results in various levels of purity.
Which resin should I buy for Pedi or SDI regeneration?
When purchasing resin for PEDI or SDI regeneration plants we advise buying the cation in the regenerated hydrogen form. It’s strongly recommended to buy the anion resin in the exhausted chloride form given the swell factor. When in the chloride form there are 12-15% more beads per cubic foot.
