Is all extended life antifreeze the same?
For nearly a decade, vehicle manufacturers have been introducing and using a variety of extended-life coolants. The only thing these coolants have in common is that they all seem to differ in formulation and color. There are orange coolants, green coolants, blue coolants, red coolants, yellow coolants, even pink ones.
What does OAT antifreeze mean?
organic additive technology
An organic additive technology (OAT) coolant contains only organic corrosion inhibitors such as carboxylates and triazole. The carboxylate acid inhibitors used in OAT coolants have very low depletion rates.
Is OAT and Hoat antifreeze the same?
OAT is an extended life coolant with a life expectancy of 5 years/150,000 miles. Most universal coolants are OAT designs. HOAT (Figure 2) — HOAT technology contains organic acids and several inorganic additives. HOAT applications typically contain silicate.
What color is OAT antifreeze?
The Colors of Coolant
TYPE | INHIBITOR TECHNOLOGY | COLOR |
---|---|---|
OAT (Organic Acid Technology) | Organic Acids | ORANGE |
HOAT (Hybrid OAT) | Silicates & Organic Acids | YELLOW |
HOAT (Hybrid OAT, Phosphate-free) | NAP Free | TURQUOISE |
P-HOAT (Phosphated HOAT) | Phosphates & Organic Acids | PINK |
Is green and yellow antifreeze the same?
Usually (but not always) dyed orange or yellow so you could tell the difference between OAT and IAT, this coolant has similar corrosion protection as the green stuff, however they are designed to be slower acting, hence the extended-life moniker.
Can you mix different OAT coolants?
OAT coolants use organic acids in order to prevent corrosion. Some people believe that they can mix the two. This is a mistake and can lead to expensive repairs. The two coolants should never be mixed together as they do not react well.
Can I mix universal coolant with OAT?
Makers of universal coolants say their products are formulated to be compatible with all cooling systems (foreign or domestic) and all coolant types (traditional green, OAT and OAT-hybrid with silicate).
What happens if you mix OAT and Hoat antifreeze?
Coolants of different technologies are not compatible nor interchangeable (OAT, HOAT or IAT). Mixing these coolants could result in: accelerated corrosion within the engine and cooling systems. the coolant having an ammonia smell.
What brand of antifreeze is Hoat?
Valvoline’s Zerex G-05 antifreeze is a hybrid organic acid technology (HOAT) chemistry that combines the best of conventional and organic acid-based chemistry to provide protection against rust and corrosion.
Is green antifreeze OAT?
VW, Audi, and Porsche are OAT users, too, but most others have resisted. Instead of OAT, most new cars now use a “hybrid” antifreeze that’s formulated with both OAT and the silicate inhibitors from green (Japanese hybrids have different inhibitors). It comes in too many colors to pretend this type is color-coded.
Is it OK to mix yellow and green antifreeze?
You can mix two different colors of the same kind of coolant without any problem whatsoever.
What coolants should not be mixed?
Which antifreeze is universal?
STP® Universal (All Season) Antifreeze/Coolant is a superior quality ethylene glycol-based engine coolant with a low silicate corrosion inhibitor package. This product protects coolant system metals, including heat-rejecting aluminum, against pitting caused by cavitation and corrosion.
Is Prestone OAT or Hoat?
Yes. Prestone is an OAT coolant/antifreeze but also contains anti-corrosion ingredients to protect your cooling system. It can be used in all cars effectively, offering the same levels of protection, and without any damage.
Can you mix Hoat with regular antifreeze?
HOAT coolants formulations are not compatible with OAT coolants because they do contain nitrites. They should not be mixed together.
Does Prestone make a Hoat antifreeze?
Prestone Prime will guard against temperature extremes and the effects of rust, corrosion and premature water pump failure. Formulated to work with All Vehicles. Universally works with all fluid colors; all OAT, POAT, HOAT & IAT. 5-year/150,000-mile Extended Life Formula.
