What should a second grader know academically?
Your child will:
- Read, write, count, and sequence numbers up to 1,000.
- Identify place value to the thousands.
- Represent quantities in multiple ways (e.g., 36 = 18 + 18 = 14 + 14 + 8)
- Know addition and subtraction facts to 20.
- Mentally add or subtract any two-digit numbers.
- Add and subtract three-digit numbers.

What is the second grade curriculum?
In the second grade, children are usually 7 to 8 years old. Students are taught subjects such as Math, Science, Geography and Social Studies. In Math, they are introduced to larger numbers (building up on what was taught to them in the first grade) and fundamental operations such as addition and subtraction.
What your 2nd grader should have learned?
Second graders will begin writing their own narratives. They should understand how to write in complete sentences using proper capitalization and punctuation. Additionally, they will begin to experiment with writing stories with a complete plot.

Reading. At School: Kids will identify and correctly use nouns and verbs,recognize simple prefixes and suffixes,and identify simple multiple-meaning words.

Set upper and lower limits on students’ goals to teach realistic goal setting (they can always be removed later).
