How hard is it to drive the Gibb River Road?
Driving along the Gibb River Road is no easy feat– because the road is mainly gravel, at times very corrugated and others is just plain rock – some special equipment is definitely needed. Lonely Planet recommends ‘a high clearance 4WD with two spare tyres’.
Is the Gibb River Road worth it?
The Gibb River Road is definitely worth it and three nights give you a chance to have a good look at the western side. You could spend a night at Windjana Gorge so you can check out that and Tunnel Creek, and then go up to Bell Gorge. Lennard Gorge is on the way.

High clearance 4 wheel drives are recommended for the Gibb River Road for a reason. You can drive through the Kimberley along the sealed Great Northern Highway to get to Kununurra. But even the attractions on this road (like the Bungle Bungles) require a 4WD to enter.

In the later dry season the Gibb River Road is usually suitable for any two wheel drive vehicles. Backpackers tackle it in stationwagons or old VW campervans and do just fine, but a bus is of course a different story for the reasons that you describe.

You do need the extra strength and clearance of an offroad trailer to withstand the corrugations and to avoid damage to the bottom when negotiating the creek crossings. That’s why you can’t take caravans on the Gibb River Road.

Can you free camp on Gibb River Road?
We usually choose to free camp but while travelling The Gibb River Road we were happy to stay at campgrounds, some within cattle stations as large as 3.5 million acres! We came from the Eastern Kununurra end and the free camp options were minimal anyway.
Can you buy alcohol on the Gibb River Road?
Alcohol, we get a lot of questions about this. Kununurra does have Liquor Restrictions which is currently limited to 3 bottles of wine/one carton of beer OR one bottle of spirits per person, per day with all bottle shops closed on Sundays.
Can you take a semi off-road caravan on the Gibb River Road?
It is possible to travel the Gibb River Road with an off-road caravan, but you should definitely not tow a standard road caravan. The only exception to this is if you would like to visit El Questro from Kununurra (see below).
