What is reference ADC?
ADCs convert analog inputs that can vary from zero volts on up to a maximum voltage level that is called the reference voltage. The reference voltage determines the ceiling of what the ADC can convert, and is essentially the yardstick against which every proportion and result is measured.
How does an ADC measure current?
The chip is powered by the voltage between the supply and ground, therefore the measurement must be made in the supply side. The internal circuit measures the voltage drop across the shunt and converts it into a current to ground. This current is then converted back into a voltage by the resistor in the return leg.

The ADC is essentially comprised of an analog comparator and a Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC). The comparator senses the input voltage vs the DAC output voltage and subsequently controls whether to increment or decrement the DAC input code, such that the DAC output converges to the input voltage.

Does ADC draw current?
The ADC charges a capacitor. So, the maximum current (typically beginning of the charge) is determined by the impedance of your signal source and the voltage (use Ohm’s law to calculate, e.g. 10k impedance with 3V will produce 300 uA) and doesn’t really depend on ADC.
