What is the difference between al-amira and hijab?
Unlike some hijabs that require careful wrapping of a scarf around the head, an amira hijab quickly slips on and off, yet provides complete coverage of the head and hair.
Who wears al-amira?
Sometimes called “Amira hijab” if it has embroidery at the edge. Women wear it in United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar and Arabs of Southern Iran. This tradition has almost died out in the newer generations. Older women past 50, and those living in rural areas can still be seen wearing them.

The word is “jalabib” which means “women who believe” or “believing women.” I think jilbab has been taken from this word since it is a garment meant for Muslim women.
What is Shayla Hijab?
The shayla is a long, rectangular scarf popular in the Gulf region. It is wrapped around the head and tucked or pinned in place at the shoulders. The khimar is a long, cape-like veil that hangs down to just above the waist. It covers the hair, neck and shoulders completely, but leaves the face clear.
What’s the difference between a Shayla and a hijab?
It is no different from the standard hijab but, in the Gulf, ‘shayla’ is the specific term for a headscarf that leaves the face uncovered, while the concept of ‘hijab’ is the act of dressing modestly for religious purposes.
Is khimar and hijab the same?
A hijab is more like a head scarf that is secured around the head and covers the neck, hair and the whole of the head and the hair. It is usually not so long and just reaches the shoulders. A Khimar, however is only meant to cover the head and therefore may not be long enough to reach the neck or shoulders.
