What do you put in a nesting box for an owl?
Owls don’t build nests inside the box, so it’s best to scatter 2 to 3 inches of untreated wood shavings, dried pine needles, or leaves inside. If they find them, starlings will start to fill the box up with grass and straw material to start building their own nest and will quickly try and take over.
What kind of nests do Barn Owls make?
Nesting: Barn Owls build nests in hollow trees, cliff cavities, in buildings, and nest boxes. They do not build a true nest, but much of the debris around the nest, including pellets, is formed into a depression. The female lays 2-11 eggs (usually about 5), and incubates them for 29-34 days.
Do you put anything in an owl box?
I recommend putting two inches of wood chippings into the bottom of the nest box. Tawny owls do not collect nesting material. They make a nest scrape in the debris that they find at the bottom. Other species, such as jackdaws and grey squirrels often colonise owl nest boxes.

How do I keep squirrels out of my owl box?
My first attempt to prevent squirrels from taking over the box had consisted of a 14-inch-wide piece of metal flashing wrapped around the tree trunk both above and below the box. This seemed to deter those pesky intruders for the better part of a year, but the persistence of squirrels can never be doubted.

A typical barn owl nest box has a six-inch entrance hole that is suitable for a barn owl but too small for a great horned owl, and the hole should be approximately four inches above the floor of the box.
What type of wood do you use for an owl nestbox?
Softwood ply (usually Scandinavian or Canadian) is perfectly adequate, cheaper, and better for the environment than hardwood. What to do if an owl is roosting in the nestbox?
If owls are roosting in the box, it’s best to wait until the weather is dry with little wind, to avoid flushing them out into bad weather. (Barn Owls’ feathers are not waterproof and they can get waterlogged and chilled in wind and rain.) More about cleaning our nestboxes.
