What is Rstp used for?

How does Pvst differ from STP?
PVST is usually used on VLANS (or Virtual Local Area Network) while RSTP is often used in LAN. RSTP operates much like STP with Cisco’s enhancements while PVST is a Cisco proprietary in itself. PVST deals with VLANs which means it handles more network devices compared to the RSTP.

Because, in PVST+, STP process is done for a small group of devices, for the devices in the same VLAN. Not for the whole devices in that network. The performance is better in PVST+ than normal STP (CST), but, here the CPU and memory usage are more. This is one of the disadvantages of PVST+.
Why is STP needed?
STP can help prevent bridge looping on LANs that include redundant links. Without STP, it would be difficult to implement that redundancy and still avoid network looping. STP monitors all network links, identifies redundant connections and disables the ports that can lead to looping.
