Can you climb Misti volcano?
Climbing El Misti volcano was one of my favourite things I did on my trip through South America! It will be challenging and tiring, but the scenic view is unbeatable. When walking around the nearby city of Arequipa, you can see the tall, steep volcano looming up in the distance. It’s right there, challenging you.

El Misti Geology – Past & Present El Misti lies in the Andean Mountain chain and has been known for past eruptions centuries ago, the last major eruption occurring sometime between 1440 and 1470. The Andes Mountains and its El Misti volcano are a result of the Nazca Plate subducting underneath the South American Plate.

The magma feeding the stratovolcanoes of the Andes Mountains, including El Misti, is associated with ongoing subduction of the Nazca Plate beneath the South American Plate. El Misti’s most recent—and relatively minor—eruption occurred in 1985.
