Can MOSFET replace diode?
The schottky diode can be replaced with a P-Channel MOSFET to provide reverse battery protection as shown in Figure 4-1. The forward drop of the diode can be reduced by replacing the schottky diode with a P-channel MOSFET and its body diode oriented in the same direction as the schottky diode.
What is a reverse diode?
The backward diode is a special form of tunnel diode in which the tunneling phenomenon is only incipient, and the negative resistance region virtually disappears. The forward current is very small and becomes equivalent to the reverse current of a conventional diode.
Can MOSFET act as diode?
Yes, power MOSFETs have a parasitic diode called Body Diode. As a result of this diode, a single MOSFET can work only as a unidirectional switch. A single MOSFET can’t switch-off the opposite direction, because the diode conducts independent of the gate. The body diode is usually fairly slow to turn on.
How does a MOSFET work as a diode?
MOSFETs, whether SiC-MOSFETs or otherwise, have a body diode between the drain and the source, as indicated in the diagram. As a consequence of the MOSFET structure, the body diode is formed by the pn junction between the source and drain, and is also called a parasitic diode or an internal diode.
How does a diode protect reverse polarity?
The simplest protection against reverse battery protection is a diode in series with the battery, as seen in Figure 1. In Figure 1, the diode becomes forward biased and the load’s normal operating current flows through the diode. When the battery is installed backwards, the diode reverse–biases and no current flows.
Does diode conduct reverse bias?
Whereas in reverse biasing, the depletion width at the p-n junction is thicker than that in forward biasing and its potential barrier is large. Thus the charge carriers cannot move across the depletion region and hence diode does not conduct electric current in reverse biasing.
How can MOSFET be used as a diode?
To minimize this forward drop you can configure a MOSFET as an ideal diode, which has a very low drop in the forward direction (equal to the current times the MOSFET’s ON resistance) while blocking the current in the reverse direction.
What is reverse based diode?
Reverse biased diode means that positive end of the battery is connected to the negative end of diode and the negative end of the battery is connected to the positive end of the diode.
