I have the Sigma 17-70 2.8/4.5 DC Macro and it is very sharp. Dyxum rates the 17-50 OS @ 4.50 and the 17-70 @ 4.43. So it seems like a coin flip.

That being said, and something that you also need to be aware of is that with Sigma, there is sample variation so the copies of the 17-50 that I played with may not have been as sharp as the copies of the 17-70.
