What does ACS 5-year estimates mean?
The 5-year estimates from the ACS are “period” estimates that represent data collected over a period of time. The primary advantage of using multiyear estimates is the increased statistical reliability of the data for less populated areas and small population subgroups.
How do I get ACS 5-year estimate?
5-Year ACS estimates can be also accessed via the Census Bureau’s American FactFinder web application. However, detailed ACS tables for block groups are not published in American FactFinder, they are only included in the Summary File product.
Should I use ACS 1-year or 5-year estimates?
Deciding Which ACS Estimate to Use The 1-year estimates for an area reflect the most cur- rent data but they have larger margins of error than the 5-year estimates because they are based on a smaller sample. The 5-year estimates for an area have larger samples and smaller margins of error than the 1-year estimates.
How far back does ACS data go?
Data availability for geographic areas differs by population size: 1-year estimates are available for areas of population 65,000 or more, while 5-year estimates are available for all areas. (Three-year estimates had been produced for areas with populations of 20,000 or more through the 2011-13 period.)
What are ACS 1 year estimates?
Every year the ACS produces single-year estimates for geographic areas with populations of 65,000 or more, with an annual sample size of about 3 million addresses. There are about 6,500 geographic areas that met the 65,000 or more population threshold for 1-year estimates.
How often is the ACS conducted?
every 10 years
The survey provides current data about all communities every year, rather than once every 10 years. It is sent to a small percentage of the population on a rotating basis throughout the decade. No household will receive the survey more often than once every five years.
How do I get census block data?
Data.census.gov does not have an address search feature available. However, you can access geographic information, such as the state, county, tract number, block number, and block group number, about a particular address using the Census Geocoder.
How does ACS estimate population?
The ACS collects data from the 50 states, Washington, DC, and Puerto Rico, where it is called the Puerto Rico Community Survey. It is a continuous survey, in which each month a sample of housing unit addresses receives a questionnaire, with approximately three million addresses surveyed each year.
What happens if I refuse the American Community Survey?
Those who decline to complete the survey may receive visits to their homes from Census Bureau personnel. Because it is a mandatory survey, it is governed by federal laws that could impose a fine of as much as $5,000 for refusing to participate.
Is ACS data adjusted for inflation?
Given the potential impact of inflation on observed differences of dollar-denominated data across time periods, ACS data users should adjust for the effects of inflation. Such an adjustment will provide comparable estimates accounting for inflation.
How do I access ACS data?
Get Started Accessing ACS Data Check out data.census.gov, the Census Bureau’s main data dissemination tool. Here, you can access tables and maps with ACS data. You can also view data.census.gov Resources for step-by-step guidance, video tutorials, FAQs, and more.

What do I need to consider when using ACS data?
You must think about the balance between currency and sample size/reliability/precision. For details, research implications, and examples, see “Understanding and Using ACS Single-Year and Multiyear Estimates,” in section 3 of the handbook “Understanding and Using ACS Data: What All Data Users Need to Know.”
Are the 5-year estimates available for all geographies?
The 5-year estimates are available for all geographies down to the block group level. See Supported Geography for details on each product’s published summary levels. In total, there are 87 different summary levels available with over 578,000 geographic areas.
