Luminance Contrast is the amount of light reflected from one surface as compared to the amount of light reflected from another surface. Australian / New Zealand Standard AS/NZ 1428.4. 1-2009 requires Luminance contrast in a range of 30% to 60% based on the type of building elements.
What is LRV difference?
Visual contrast sensitivity is the ability to perceive differences between an object and its background e.g. a handle from the door or the nosing from the rest of the step. The amount of light a surface reflects is known as the Light Reflectance Value (LRV). The range of LRV is 0 (black) to 100 (white).
How do you calculate luminance contrast?
There are essentially two ways to measure the luminance contrast, in a laboratory or on-site, but both require the use of an expensive tristimulus colorimeter or spectrophotometer. The equipment will measure the ‘Luminance Reflective Value’ of each surface.

LRV means light reflection value and refers to how much light is reflected. The scale is from 0-100 with 0 being dark and 100 being bright. She recommends colors with an LRV of above 65.
Is pure white too bright for exterior?
In my opinion, you don’t want to use a white that is too bright, especially on the exterior of your house. If you do, your house will be blinding to look at in full sunlight. Going with an off-white or a white paint color that has some creaminess to it, is the way to go.
