Where do the wires go from the alternator?
The positive wire from the battery is connected to the starter. The voltage detecting wire is connected to the battery, while the ignition wire is connected to the key switch from the alternator.
Where is positive and negative on an alternator?
Face the rear of the alternator toward you, and find the threaded stud and nut on the back of the alternator near the top—the location of the output (battery positive) terminal. The battery positive lead connects to this terminal via a ring terminal connector, with the nut holding it in place.
Which battery cable do you disconnect to test the alternator?
You can check the alternator by simply starting your car and then disconnecting the negative battery cable. Be careful doing this, though, because there are a lot of moving parts in your engine compartment that could cause injury.
Why is my Volvo 240 alternator not working properly?
The 240 original alternator design doesn’t offer enough BELT WRAP (or belt to pulley contact) for an alternator that can push a heavy load. Volvo engineers added a second belt to the 240, which makes it better, but when you exceed the grip capacity for those belts, it’s just going to slip.
How long are the bolts on a 240 alternator?
The stock aluminum 240 alternator bracket is 15 mm thick and your stock bolts are most likely M8 x 1.25 x 30 mm long. The 30 mm bolt length is measured NOT counting the head in case you’re curious. Keep this info in mind when deciding how long of a bolt you’ll need if you add an idler pulley bracket and spacers.
Will a Bosch 240 alternator fit in a Volvo red block?
The alternator Mechman provided for me was custom prepared by them for a VOLVO. This means they did some MINOR MACHINING to the case so it would easily bolt up in the Volvo red block mounting location similar to a normal Volvo Bosch alternator. And of course it also got a double V-belt pulley since that’s needed for a 240.
Can cooling ducts be added to a Volvo 240 alternator?
CAN COOLING DUCTS BE ADDED TO A VOLVO 240 ALTERNATOR? Yes, if you’re determined enough . . . . But there isn’t any room behind this 240 alternator below.
