When did UCG become Nuig?

In 1908, it was changed to University College Galway, or UCG for short. In 1997, it was changed again to National University of Ireland Galway, or NUI Galway for short.
Why did UCG change to Nuig?
Last week the university launched its new corporate identity. Once it received its autonomy, the college had hoped to style itself University of Galway, but this proved impossible under the terms of the 1997 Universities Act. From now on the college will be referred to as the National University of Ireland, Galway.
