What is the best bait to use with a method feeder?
A bunch of four dead red maggots is very effective, especially in the cold, when small fish are less active. I like to use maggots that have been frozen. They have a soft, stretched appearance, but are still quite tough. Use a bunch on a size 12 hook.
How do you fish in a lake in the winter?
Another winter fishing tactic is to use a smaller sized lure. During these colder months, a fish doesn’t need to feed as often, and they find smaller prey easier to digest and catch. If you present them with something small and slow, you’re mimicking their natural feeding preferences during this season.

How far should hook be from feeder?
The typical length of a hook link, at least at the start of a days feeder fishing, is 24 inches. Measure 24” of line from the hook and double it over at that point.

Because the cold reduces a fish’s metabolism, they aren’t going to go for the big stuff. Two- to three-inch lures are going to catch the most fish. Also, consider using attractants for soft plastic lures. Because fish aren’t as hungry in the cold, attractants will encourage them to bite and hold on once they do.
