Is there an age limit for the Great North Run?
No children or unregistered participants are permitted on the course at any time. Participants must be: 14 years of age on the event day to take part in the 5K. 15 years of age on the event day to take part in the 10K.
Can you transfer GNR place?
Great Run event entries are non-transferable into subsequent years events and we do not offer a deferment policy aside from the Great North Run (see separate policy).
How hard should a 5k feel?
If you’re in great race shape it should be habit and feel pretty much normal during the 5k all the way to about 2.5 miles. Of course, like someone mentioned if you feel on pace then you have slowed down at that point.
How fast should a beginner run a 5k?
Average for beginners If you run a mile about every 8 minutes, you can count on your 5K time being under or around 25 minutes. However, this isn’t easily achievable for many people, so beginners should aim to run a mile in about 9 to 13 minutes. Set up a fitness plan that builds up over a few weeks or months.
Can you pull out of the Great North Run?
Up to 10 weeks before race day, you can withdraw from the event and get a refund if you have a doctor’s note, which you can send to the Great Run customer services. For the Great North Run, you will be eligible for a guaranteed entry the following year if you withdraw your entry.

Anything above 70% is a good quality result – described by parkrun as Regional Class – and 60% is Local Class. So how can I use age-grading to measure and improve my own performance? The first thing to do is to check your current form across a range of distances/events.
