The Nameless King is Gwyn’s firstborn son, so he is also a God. As far as I know, gods aren’t supposed to go hollow, or at least not until they lose their purpose (as evidenced by Gwyndolin whose purpose was to watch over Anal Londo). Gwyn looked like hollow in DS1, but that’s likely the burns from the First Flame.
Is ds3 and Elden Ring connected?
That means that while the games are very similar in their worlds, ideas and gameplay, there’s no story link between them. So no, players will not need to have played Dark Souls or any other of From Software’s back catalogue to understand Elden Ring, though it might help give an appreciation for certain ideas.
