Climbing Nevado Sajama is very physically demanding, as the extremely high altitude and steepness of many sections of the ascent can make the experience very uncomfortable.
When to climb Sajama?
The best time to attempt to climb Sajama is between July and September, on account of the snowfall that can be expected from October to April. The main obstacles to ascent are severe local storms, high winds and the altitude.
How do I get to Sajama National Park?
There are frequent buses going between La Paz and Oruro, so you need only tell the driver that you wish to exit at Patacamaya. Once you’ve reached Patacamaya, you can take a shared van (colectivo) to the village of Sajama about 3 hours away.

Is it possible to climb Sajama in Bolivia?
Climbing Sajama from the Bolivian side is only allowed between April and October. This seems to be a new decree and also applies to all mountains in the Sajama National Park. What is the elevation of Sajama?
Sajama reaches a summit of 21,463 feet (6,542 m), creating the highest point in the national park and Bolivia’s entire country. It rises out of the plains into a fairly symmetrical cone-shaped mountain. Cerro Huisalla at 16,506 feet (5,031 m) and Huayna Potosi at 16,932 feet (5,161 m) are two additional peaks located are the larger Sajama massif.
