Will SRAM road shifters work with Shimano?
SRAM’s cassettes and chains are compatible with all of Shimano’s groupsets, and vice versa. Likewise, Shimano and SRAM buyers have the freedom to mix different levels of chains and cassettes so long as they are designed for the same kind of transmission.
Do derailleurs and shifters have to match?
As a general rule of thumb, it’s best not to mix and match drivetrain components from different brands. While things such as cranks, chains and cassettes are mostly inter-compatible between brands, generally speaking, shifters and derailleurs aren’t.
Can I use a Shimano front derailleur with SRAM shifters?
Yes, you can mix Shimano and SRAM front derailleurs and shifters. It’s the rear derailleur that is not cross compatible, with the exception that SRAM has made ‘Attack’ shifters that will work with the Shimano rear derailleurs.

SRAM shifters come in four different standars:
- Shifters compatible with “Shimano 2:1” standard. They come in versions made for 6, 7, 8 and 9 speed cassettes.

- SRAM X-Actuation.
Can you use SRAM AXS with Shimano?
Considering these parts were never designed to play well together, the Sram GX AXS shifter and derailleur work perfectly on the Shimano XTR cassette.
Can you mix SRAM and Shimano drivetrain?
Can you put a Shimano chain on a Sram drivetrain and vice versa? Yes and no. As long as the speeds match, it theoretically should work. In the real world, we have noticed that Shimano chains on Sram cassettes and chainrings tend to not line up with the teeth on the cogs perfectly.
Are SRAM cassettes compatible with Shimano?
SRAM and Shimano cassettes, on either road or mountain bike, are interchangeable with each other as the spacing is the same between the sprockets.
