What is AKC Junior Showmanship?
Junior Showmanship offers children between the ages of 9 and under 18 years of age an opportunity to develop their handling skills, learn about good sportsmanship, dogs, and dog shows. Juniors are judged on their ability to present, or handle, their dogs as they would in the breed ring.
Can kids participate in dog shows?
To compete, your child must be between 9 and under 18 years old and must obtain a Junior Number prior to the day of the event to track your wins. Juniors must be able to control their dogs at all times.
At what age can you start showing a dog?
Six months
Six months or older on the day of the show. Recognized breed by the AKC. Registered with the AKC.
How are dog shows graded?
The judges examine the dogs and place them according to how closely each dog compares with the judge’s mental image of the perfect dog as described in the breed’s official standard. The main consideration is the dog’s conformation or overall appearance, temperament and structure.
What is AKC pal?
The Purebred Alternative Listing (PAL) program is designed to allow dogs to participate in AKC Companion and Performance Events. The AKC Events that a PAL dog can participate in are: Agility Trials (All Breeds) Canine Good Citizen (All Breeds) Coursing Ability (All Breeds)
How do AKC dog shows work?
Each AKC-recognized breed falls into one of seven group classifications. The seven groups are Sporting, Hound, Working, Terrier, Toy, Non-Sporting and Herding. Four placements are awarded in each group, but only the first-place winner advances to the Best in Show competition.

No dog can compete if it is taped or bandaged or in any way has anything attached to it for medical purposes. If you, or your child, haven’t actually seen a Junior Showmanship competition in person, we highly recommend that you observe one.
