What is Synthrapol and why is it used?
Synthrapol is a liquid detergent used as a prewash and afterwash for dyed or painted fabrics and as a wetting agent for fabric dyes and paints.
What is the difference between Retayne and Synthrapol?
Retayne FIXES dye to fabric and should be used in cases where you are concerned that a fabric dye may bleed. Use Retayne as directed, as a pre-wash or before putting suspect fabrics into a quilt. Synthrapol is a special detergent that suspends dye particles so that they do not reattach to fabric.
How do you wash with Synthrapol?
Washing machine
- Fill your washing machine with 140°F (60°C) water.
- Once the washing machine is filled, add 1 to 2 tablespoons (15 to 30 ml) of Synthrapol.
- Add your dry cotton fabric and let the machine run for a 10 to 12 minute wash.
Can I use Retayne on a finished quilt?
Retayne is a color fixative. It should be used in pre-washing your commercially dyed cotton fabrics before you use them in a project, not after you have completed your quilt project.
Does vinegar set colors in fabric?
Although there is a popular belief that using salt and white vinegar to set dyes in your fabrics work, it actually does not. The acid in the vinegar helps set the dye, but is only essential in the dying process and does not really work for cotton dyes.
What are the ingredients in Synthrapol?
We begin today with the special detergent Synthrapol, used in several phases of dyeing; it is composed of water, isopropanol* and detergent. It will remove sizing from the fabric before coloring, remove excess dye, and, my favorite use, it serves as a concentrated wetting agent, i.e., a surfacant.
How do you reverse color bleeding?
Laundry detergent works great if you have a small area of bleed.
- Fill a container or sink with a gallon of water.
- Add two tablespoons of detergent directly to the dyed area if possible.
- Work it around with an old toothbrush.
- Allow it to soak for 30 minutes.
- Rewash the garment and check.
How do you stop colors from bleeding in the wash?
Add 1 cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle or one-half cup salt to the wash to help hold in colors. Use color-catcher sheets, which trap extraneous dyes during the wash cycle to prevent bleeding. Don’t overstuff your dryer.
Can you use Epsom salt for dyeing fabric?

How do you use Synthrapol in a front loader?
1. For a messy load of fabric covered with dye and soda and maybe thickener. Put it all in the washer with a 1⁄2 teaspoon to 1 Tablespoon of Synthrapol depending on the number of yards of fabric. DO NOT USE TOO MUCH AS IT WILL FOAM AND THE MACHINE WILL STOP AUTOMATICALLY.
