Doxazosin belongs to a group of medicines called alpha blockers. It’s used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and symptoms of an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic enlargement).

Doxazosin is in a class of medications called alpha-blockers. It relieves the symptoms of BPH by relaxing the muscles of the bladder and prostate. It lowers blood pressure by relaxing the blood vessels so that blood can flow more easily through the body.
Is doxazosin extended-release?
The extended-release form of doxazosin (Cardura XL) is for use only in treating benign prostatic hyperplasia and should not be used to treat hypertension. Doxazosin may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
How does doxazosin make you feel?
Common side effects If doxazosin makes you feel weak, sleepy, dizzy, or like everything around you is spinning (vertigo), stop what you’re doing and sit or lie down until you feel better. Do not drive, cycle or use tools or machinery. It’s best not to drink alcohol, as it will make you feel worse.
When should doxazosin be taken?
You can take both types of tablet with or without food. You can take doxazosin in the morning or evening, but it’s best to take it at the same time each day. Some standard tablets have a score line to help you break the tablet and make it easier to swallow.
Does doxazosin make you sleepy?
Doxazosin may cause some people to become drowsy or less alert than they are normally. Make sure you know how you react to this medicine before you drive, use machines, or do anything else that could be dangerous if you are dizzy, drowsy, or are not alert.
Can doxazosin cause anxiety?

How quickly does doxazosin work?
The blood pressure-lowering effect occurs within one to six hours of a dose of doxazosin. Relief from symptoms of BPH and an increase in urine flow have been reported as early as one week after the initiation of doxazosin.
