Red Arrows Relocation The Red Arrows are currently based at RAF Scampton which will be closed in late 2022 and the Red Arrows relocated to another RAF base. In May 2020 it was announced that the Red Arrows would be based at RAF Waddington and relocation will take place before RAF Scampton closes in late 2022.
Why are the Red Arrows called Enid and GYPO?
Reds 1 to 5 are known as ‘Enid’ (named after Enid Blyton, author of the Famous Five books) and Reds 6 to 9 are known as ‘Gypo’ (the nickname of one of the team’s pilots back in the 1960s). Enid continue to perform close-formation aerobatics, while Gypo perform more dynamic manoeuvres.
What is the smoke that comes out of the Red Arrows?
How the smoke is created. The basic vapour colour is white, produced by injecting diesel into the hot exhaust from the jet engine. This reaches temperatures of over 400 degrees Celsius and vaporises immediately. The blue and red colours are made by mixing dye with the diesel.
