To support this, we ask authors to pay an open access article publishing charge/fee of £3000/$4800 (excluding VAT) on acceptance of their paper. We can offer discounts and waivers for authors who cannot pay. Consideration of the paper is not related to whether authors can or cannot pay the fee.

Is BMJ free to publish?
BMJ Open aims to promote transparency in the publication process by publishing reviewer reports and previous versions of manuscripts as pre-publication histories. Authors are asked to pay article-publishing charges on acceptance; the ability to pay does not influence editorial decisions.
Do authors of manuscripts that are accepted for publication have to pay BMJ?
Payment will not be required unless your article is accepted. Accepted articles will not be published until payment has been received. BMJ does not refund APCs once paid.
Is it free to publish in BMJ?
All authors whose work is accepted by BMJ Open will be asked to pay an article processing charge. Fees will be waived for authors without the means to pay, and as with the BMJ, editors will be unaware of the payment status of articles when they are making their decisions on publication.
Does the order of the authors matter?
Although an author list should only reflect those who have made substantial contributions to a research project and its draft manuscript (see, for example, the authorship guidelines of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors), we’d be remiss to say that author order doesn’t matter.
What are the general rules for authorship in a publication?
1. Everyone who is listed as an author should have made a substantial, direct, intellectual contribution to the work. For example (in the case of a research report) they should have contributed to the conception, design, analysis and/or interpretation of data. Honorary or guest authorship is not acceptable.
