How is Capri-Sun made?
Capri Sun pouches are made by bonding layers of aluminum and plastic together, making them very difficult to recycle. Only 2% are estimated to be collected nationwide for recycling (primarily through TerraCycle, which repurposes hard-to-recycle packages and products into items like tote bags and laptop cases).

What fabric is best for produce bags?
I like muslin because it’s super light (and cheap too), but any cotton fabric would be fine if you’re using scrap fabric. And if you don’t have cotton fabric, that’s okay. Just use what you have, as long as you feel comfortable throwing produce in it.
What fabric should I use to make a tote bag?
Sturdy fabrics such as canvas, denim, twill, drapery fabric, upholstery fabric, and outdoor fabric are best for tote bags. Since many tote bags seldom require cleaning, novelty drapery and upholstery fabrics can be fun choices. Faux leather vinyl and nylon are a couple more durable options.

We will use 6 Capri Sun pouches to make the bottom and sides of the bag. Overlap the top of one Capri Sun pouch 1/4″ over the bottom of another. Stitch together with a straight stitch. For extra strength and decoration, straight stitch, then zigzag stitch on top.
