Will 9 speed chainrings work with 10 speed chain?
A nine speed crank set will work with a 10 speed drive train. However it’s not all plain sailing. You can have trouble using a 10 speed FD with a 9 speed crank set. It doesn’t shift as far out as the 9 speed so you may experience sloppy changes to the outer ring and chain rub against the FD in some gears.
Can you use 10 speed crankset with 9 speed cassette?
The 10 speed chain rings will be fine with a 9 speed chain running on them. The problem you will have is the spacing between the chain rings. The 10 speed rings sit closer together than they do on the 9 speed.
Are Shimano 9 and 10 speed chainrings interchangeable?
Shimano says you should replace the inner chainring(s) with specially designated 9- or 10-speed ones, but then they’re all too eager to sell you stuff, whether you need it or not. These chainrings have the teeth slightly farther to the right than the older chainrings to work a little better with the narrower chains.
Does it matter what speed the chainring is for?
Your chainring has to match the bcd/bolt-pattern or it just won’t fit. No, it doesn’t have to match your chain speed.
Are 9 speed and 10 speed chains the same?
The main difference between a 9 speed chain and a 10 speed chain is that the 10 speed chain is thinner in width, because of the 10 speed cassette, which in turn means the chain is lighter.
Will a 9 speed cassette fit on a 10 speed hub?
Interestingly, the reverse is not always true; you cannot use a 9 speed cassette on all 10 speed hubs. Shimano’s 10 speed specific hubs are only designed to be compatible with 10 speed cassettes and, as with most computer programs, downward compatibility does not work as well as upward.
Can I run a 10 speed chain on a 9 speed cassette?
The short answer here is “no”, but you may or may not notice (or you may notice but not be bothered by it). Using a 10 speed chain on a 9 speed cassette (or an 11 on 10) works because the chain is slightly narrower.
What is the difference between a 9 speed chain and a 10 speed chain?
How many gears do professional cyclists use?
Pros often use a 55×11-tooth high gear for time trials. On flat or rolling stages they might have 53/39T chainrings with an 11-21T cassette. In moderate mountains they switch to a large cog of 23T or 25T. These days, they’ve joined the big-gear revolution like many recreational riders.
Can you run a 10 speed chain on a 9 speed cassette?
You can run a 10sp chain on 9sp set up, its not recommended but yes it will work. Our KMC x10sl-Ti chains are +/- 241g at 112 links and the KMC x9sl-Ti is +/- 265g at 116 links. I have yet to try a 10sp chain on the 9sp drivetrain but I think Ill be putting on the new KMC x10SL-DLC chain on the bike.
Will a 9 speed chain work on a 10 speed bike?
Re: Will a 9 speed chain work on a 10 speed cassette? I think the short answer is that while 9 speed stuff will work ‘sort of’ with 10 speed they are not designed for each other.
Can you turn a 9 speed bike into a 10 speed?
9 speed and 10 speed cassette are the same size.. they fit all the same wheels N hubs. only diff is the spacing between the rings and the thickness of the chain. you’ll need a new shifter, derailleur and chain to make a 10 speed work on a 9 speed.
Is there a difference between a 9 and 10 speed chain?
Can you use a 9 speed chain on a 10 speed bike?
Any road up, the 9sp (waggly) chain work absolutely fine on my 10sp system, except it was noisy. The chain slipped into the sprocket teeth ok and didn’t ride up between the cassette.
What cranks do pro riders use?
Will a 10 speed cassette fit on a 9 speed hub?
You can put a new 10 or 11 speed cassette on any of the older 9 speed hubs. So, regardless of brand, feel free to buy your wheels a nicely upgraded new steed.
Can you use a 9 speed rear derailleur on a 10 speed cassette?
The cable pull is different for the 10-speed rear derailleurs and the 9-speed rear derailleurs won’t line up properly with the cogs when used with a 10-speed shifter and cassette.
Can I use a 10 speed chain with a 9 speed crankset?
The only typical problem you can get is with your front derailleur indexing as the spacing for 10 speed is very marginally smaller. Having said that, like John T, I used 10 speed Dura Ace chain and derailleurs with their 9 speed crankset with no problems whatsoever.
Can I put a 9 speed cassette on a 10 speed chain?
I have 9 speed cassette and 9 speed chain on several bikes with 10 speed cranks. The only issue is that the chainrings are closer together than a 9 speed one would be. So that if I am in the small front ring and one of the smallest rear cogs (not a situation that often occurs) the chain does rub against the large chainring.
How often do you break your chain on a 10-speed chain?
I put a 10 speed chain on a 9 speed drive train (because some people were saying they have the same spacing) and I broke my chain 4 times in 2-3 months (riding 4-5 times a week). To be fair it was a trail bike being used on some gnarly trails and I was really putting a lot of pressure of the drive train.
How many speed chainrings do you use?
8 speed chainrings with 9 speed drivetrain (chain would drop between chainrings sometimes, not sure if it was just that crankset or a common problem) 8 speed chainring with a single speed drivetrain. Ok, thanks! You haven’t run into premature wear or shifting issues with that setup?
