What does 6 AWG stand for?
The AWG system uses smaller numbers to designate larger diameters. The diameter is measured by taking a cross-section of the copper portion of the wire. 6 AWG wire is on the larger end of the spectrum in terms of common use, and is appropriate for roughly 55 amps and an absolute maximum of 60 amps.

Can you use wire nuts on #6 wire?
I’ve never seen any limitation based on wire size. As long as the Wirenut is “identified for the use” (110.14(B)), you’re fine. Personally, I don’t like to use Wirenuts when the gauges get that large, but it’s legal as long as you use the proper size Wirenuts.

What does AWG mean in wire size?
American wire gauges (AWG) are a standard set of sizes for wire conductors — the smaller the wire gauge, the larger the diameter in inches or millimeters, and vice versa. Refer to this American wire gauge conversion chart to help determine the correct wire size to order.
What is the difference between AWG and SWG?
American Wire Gauge (AWG) is a system of numerical wire sizes that start with the lowest numbers (6/0) for the largest sizes. The gauge sizes are each 26% apart based on the cross sectional area. AWG is also known as Brown & Sharpe Gage. SWG = Standard or Sterling Wire Gauge, a British wire measurement system.
What do the numbers on the American Wire Gauge mean?
The integers (as numbers) printed on the American Wire Gauge shows the gauge size. In AWG, there are a total of 44 gauges assigned to different numbers. In the list of standard sizes as integers, 4/0 (0000) is the largest diameter and 40AWG is the smallest diameter printed on AWG.
What is the largest gauge wire size?
The higher the gauge number, the smaller the wire. The largest diameter AWG size is 0000 (4/0) which is pronounced ‘four aught’, representing a diameter of .46″.
