What is IR illumination?
An infrared illuminator, or IR illuminator, is a tool that emits light in the infrared spectrum. Infrared light, or infrared radiation, has wavelengths longer than visible light and is usually experienced as heat.

The wavelength range from approximately 780 nm to 1 mm, i.e. 1,000,000 nm, is referred to as infrared radiation (there it borders on the currently much discussed range of terahertz radiation which is used for so-called “body scanners”).

IR or night vision cameras use infrared light to illuminate images in the dark. We can’t see it, but infrared light is actually all around us. IR cameras detect these invisible infrared wavelengths, enabling the camera to see in the dark.
How is infrared illumination measured?
Visible light is measured in lux, such as 0.05 lux or 0.1 lux. However, infrared light cannot be measured in lux, because it is invisible. The most common way to measure infrared light is in watts/ M² or Ft², or the energy produced by an infrared light source over a specific area.
What is the difference between 940 and 850 IR?
850nm torches will give the best picture, they will have a slightly longer usable range and they are less likely to create blurry images than 940nm torches. 850 gives better pictures because IR cameras are most sensitive to radiation in this wavelength.

Can fish see IR light?
Fish. Some forms of fish such as goldfish, salmon, piranha and cichlid can see infrared light. Salmon and some other freshwater fish have an enzyme that switches their visual systems to activate infrared seeing, which helps them to navigate and hunt in murky waters.
How far can an infrared sensor see?
It can recognize an object (fills eight pixels) at 368 meters away. It can identify a target (fills 13 pixels) at 226 meters away. Larger targets increase the distance.
How do you hide infrared illuminator?
Place the duct tape directly over the panel on the security camera and press down with your fingers. Place a second piece of duct tape, identical to the first, over the panel. The density of the duct tape will prevent the glow from the IR LED from being seen.
